New V3.0 for JD Edwards on Oracle & SQL Server

ARCTOOLS, the leading data management tool for optimizing Oracle® JD Edwards ERP data, delivers a new release which makes it even easier for customers to improve ERP performance, lower database management costs and reduce business data compliance risks.

ARCTOOLS V3.0 helps JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and World clients to manage their ERP data. With this new release, our development team has placed a particular focus on Migration, Upgrade and Cloud “Data Readiness”.

Highlights include:

  • User Interface: We continue to take into account users’ feedback and have simplified the UI, added short-cuts to access the most frequently used screens, and simplified the module configuration process with the highly intuitive ARCTOOLS Module Wizard.
  • Process Notification: We have added greater notification control and functionality allowing customers to build business processes around critical job runs as well as configuring an “Audit” notification for certain user activities. This lets administrators see clearly how ARCTOOLS is being managed and used.
  • Functionality: We have added more control over when jobs can be run. In this new release, users can specify the time delay between batch processes, which helps to manage with precision the impact of data archives on a busy system. In v3.0 you can also manage data concurrently at a transaction level. Again, giving users more granular control of the data management task list.
  • Security & Compliance :
    • An Audit Trace functionality has been added to ARCTOOLS database tables allowing managers to monitor user activity, configuration changes, user updates etc. This information can be reported on or incorporated into a notification process.
    • We have also simplified and extended the security set-up for ARCTOOLS – user access can now be managed globally by a client’s own LDAP server.

Barry Yelverton, CTO at ARCTOOLS commented, that “We’ve had some great feedback on this new version and on our product roadmap. Our clients really seem to appreciate that, not only are we making the core JD Edwards product more powerful and easier to use, but that we are also delivering value by extending ARCTOOLS data management capabilities to other Oracle Applications such as E-Business Suite, Demantra and indeed custom build Applications.”

Please contact us mmcinerney@arctools.com if you wish to receive a document with details of all the enhancements.

OVI for JD Edwards World A9.4

ARCTOOLS/400 Validated Integration with JD Edwards World A9.4

An out-of-the-box solution for managing archiving requirements while respecting data integrity in a production environment.

Integration Overview

ARCTOOLS/400 is a purging and archiving solution that supports Oracle’s JD Edwards World A9.4 running on IBM AS/400 (also known as IBM iSeries or IBM i).

The data selection for the purges is executed from a menu-driven user interface, which then runs a series of data extracts to create driving files. These analyses are configured and can be easily tweaked for customer-specific requirements.

The complexity underlying the analyses varies from simple (electronic data interchange sales orders) to more complex (purchase orders), to far more complex (modules with a recursive analysis). The resulting driving files are used by ARCTOOLS/400 to purge related files. Included are multiple purge “spec sets” for various functional areas. Custom tag files (such as F554311 to go with the F4311 PO line) are easily added to existing purges through configuration, not programming.

ovi-world-a94

The archive is executed with a proprietary code generator, creating custom programs at runtime. The purge is done in a safe, one-record-at-a-time approach, not a SQL SELECT processing millions of rows at once. This allows powerful features to be included such as the ability to specify a stop-by date and time, the ability to stop a running job on demand, and the ability to “throttle” a job, allowing customers to slow down a purge if needed to manage server performance or mirror throughput.

ARCTOOLS/400 is an independent product that does not depend on JD Edwards World software. All of the application intelligence is built into ARCTOOLS/400 at a configuration level, making integration with the JD Edwards World database easy.

Features of the ARCTOOLS/400 integration with JD Edwards World include:

  • Simple navigation.
  • Preconfigured purges for many different modules in JD Edwards World.
  • Flexibility that enables the user to easily adapt to custom files and criteria.
  • Archived data available to unmodified production objects via library lists.
  • Ability to archive data outside of JD Edwards World.

Integration Details

The integration with JD Edwards World is managed by specifying the library to purge from, the library to archive to, and the horizon date. These settings can be changed using parameters from within the ARCTOOLS/400 applications.

Each preconfigured module is based on the standard data model, incorporating related tables, joins, and selection criteria. This configuration detail is stored in the ARCTOOLS/400 extract SQL and the ARCTOOLS/400 purge rules.

Each ARCTOOLS/400 job is logged in a series of audit trails. These history files will include information such as start and stop time stamp, user information, file information, and record counts.

Announcing JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications Release 9.2 and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release 9.2

Extending its commitment to JD Edwards enterprise applications, Oracle is
announcing JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications and Tools Release 9.2.

Transformation for the Digital Economy

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Release 9.2 provides transformational business solutions for customer to address the demands of the digital economy. Innovative new JD Edwards solutions are facilitating SMART (Strategic, Mobile, Architected for Real-Time) change.

Oracle previously announced the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Internet of Things (IoT) Orchestrator with Tools Release 9.1.5.5. This new product enables customers to collect, filter, analyze, and act on real-time data as it is being transmitted by IoT devices. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers benefit by eliminating costly manual processes, by reacting to—or avoiding—business disruptions in real time, and by analyzing historical data for continuous process improvement.

When you are ready to upgrade use ARCTOOLS

Prebuilt JD Edwards EnterpriseOne IoT Orchestrations are now available to address common use cases for the asset-intensive, manufacturing, and agri- business industries. Companies can leverage the prebuilt, out-of-the-box orchestrations as models to design and implement custom orchestrations. The orchestrations being released include:

  • Add CBM Alert: Processes condition-based maintenance alerts for an asset.
  • Update Meter Readings: Updates equipment meter readings.
  • Update Equipment Location: Updates equipment geo-positioning data.
  • Kanban Check In/Check Out: Processes Kanban check-in and check-out
    transactions.
  • Add Blend Operations: Creates operations in Blend Management during the wine-making process.

Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Mobile Enterprise Applications continue to empower the mobile workforce with new applications that accelerate business execution on their device of choice. There are more than 80 mobile applications for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne available out-of-the box on Apple’s App Store, Google Play, and as Archives on the Update Center. In addition, the Oracle Mobile Application Framework and the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Application Interface Services (AIS) Server give customers the ability to extend or create new mobile applications. Also of note is an enhancement to the Manage Customer Equipment application that enables field service engineers to locate customer’s equipment through a proximity search and display the results on a map. The Manage My Work Orders mobile application is now also available in disconnected mode.

With the EnterpriseOne Tools Release 9.2, JD Edwards delivers a simple and standardized process to manage user personalizations called User Defined Objects. Enabling users to personalize their experience and interaction with JD Edwards without customization improves their productivity and satisfaction. This simple process allows business users to manage personalizations on their own schedule and removes the need to spend IT resources on deploying User Defined Objects. These objects currently include Grid Formats, Queries, One View Reports, One View Watchlists, EnterpriseOne Pages, and the Composite Application Framework.

Industry Focus that Creates Competitive Advantage

JD Edwards continues to invest in functionality that creates a competitive advantage for customers in our focus industries. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.2 delivers new strategic products for the projects, consumer goods, and manufacturing and distribution industries.

Advanced Job Forecasting delivers key capabilities for project-focused industries, such as engineering and construction to prevent project cost overruns due to lack of detail forecast visibility and to provide more accurate cash flow management throughout the project lifecycle. Advanced Job Forecasting provides project managers with significant new capabilities to capture and audit the expected detail labor and material expenses remaining on a project. The forecast can include anticipated material quantities and material cost changes as well as specific skill sets and pay levels required for remaining job phases. This new product provides several new forecast calculation methods and the ability to create user-defined calculations. Furthermore, users can save and compare multiple forecasts (what-if scenarios) and store audit trails of forecasted versus actual factors.

Outbound Inventory Management optimizes inventory performance and significantly reduces the business complexity for suppliers in the consumer goods, manufacturing and distribution industries providing vendor-managed or consignment inventory services for their customers. Outbound Inventory Management manages the complete VMI/Consignment lifecycle from defining agreements through ordering, shipments, invoicing and replenishments, supporting stronger customer collaboration, reduced customer stock-outs, and improved forecast accuracy. These capabilities result in increased customer loyalty which translates to improved supplier profitability.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Rental Management provides strategic visibility into inventory and equipment availability and supports high levels of customer service while effectively managing revenue and expenses for each rental contract. Rental Management has been enhanced to support more complex global business requirements as well as process automation and simplification.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Work Center Load Review Calendar provides daily, weekly, and monthly calendar views of scheduled work center resources with a real-time view into remaining available capacity. The application displays over and under-capacity conditions in an intuitive graphical format and provides drill-down options to make scheduling adjustments, update work orders, and support planning. This information enables production schedulers to make scheduling decisions and changes more quickly and easily.

One View Financial Statements is a new feature of the One View Reporting for Financials module. This feature allows financial system end-users to create financial statements such as balance sheets and income statements, through a very user-friendly application interface. Pre-built content and case studies will accompany this feature to enable users to quickly come up to speed on the functionality.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Release 9.2 addresses new joint accounting standards for the Recognition of Revenue issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). This new standard is effective for the first quarterly report in the first annual period beginning after December 15, 2017 (for public companies) and after December 15, 2018 (for non-public companies). Organizations may choose to adopt the new standard one year earlier that these dates. The new reporting requirements are extensive and require changes to financial systems and processes to collect the necessary data, process transactions and report—even if the application of the new accounting standard results in no significant change in the reported revenue amounts.

For US based employers, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne has been enhanced to support the Affordable Care Act Employer Shared Responsibility provisions. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne provides features to help define which employees are considered full-time for the purposes of the Affordable Care Act and therefore eligible to receive health coverage. Hours of Service Reporting and Eligibility functionality enables applicable large employers to determine whether employees should be considered full-time and therefore eligible for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provisions.

Choice – Your Business. Your Way

The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne platform and products offer an increased number of options for personalization, extension, and co-existence with other applications, including Oracle Cloud applications, to support agile business solutions that respond to customers’ unique business needs. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Release 9.2 provides customers with the choices to run their business their way.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.2 customers have the opportunity to use a simplified and modern application interface. JD Edwards leverages the Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) to create an intuitive interface while leveraging all existing business rules via the Application Interface Services (AIS) server. JD Edwards has delivered a set of application program interfaces (APIs) to simplify the process of accessing AIS services in the Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF).

To significantly reduce the cost of upgrading their systems to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Applications 9.2, customers on Applications Release 9.0 Update 2 or Release 9.1 now have the choice to use a Simplified Upgrade process. The new upgrade process identifies and replaces only the objects as delivered by Oracle. The Simplified Upgrade process reduces the time and effort required for retrofitting customizations and testing Applications 9.2.

With Tools Release 9.2, JD Edwards has removed the 10 character restriction for user ID and password to support more robust security authentication processes. This enhancement enables security officers to define complex password rules that align with their security and compliance requirements. User IDs have also been expanded to improve the end-user experience when signing into JD Edwards.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne maintains its position as a leading ERP open-systems platform offering customers a choice of many different technology options to run the product, including a complete vertically integrated Oracle technology stack. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne also provides customers a choice of deployment options such as on-premise or hybrid deployment, private cloud, and public clouds.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.2 continues to support our open platform operational delivery model with several new platform certifications. These certifications enable continued operations on the customer’s platform of choice.

Innovative tools enable citizen developers to create new business solutions that easily extend the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne platform, offering companies personalized approaches to transform and grow their businesses.

ARCOR Uses ARCTOOLS to purge JD Edwards and Demantra

Success Story – Purging JD Edwards and Demantra

Arcor_textlogo The search for a solution to proactively manage ERP data started in 2010 as part of the larger IT infrastructure review. The team recognized that the standard JD Edwards purge and archive tools were not sufficient to meet their needs and that building an in-house solution would displace resources from core tasks. ARCTOOLS was chosen as it came highly recommended and had proven its worth to more than 450 Oracle JD Edwards clients worldwide. The project focused on critical processes, Predictive Trade Planning and Demand Management and delivered immediate productivity improvements including better ERP performance and fewer issues with database timeouts in the production environment.

From JD Edwards to Demantra

Such was the success of the JD Edwards data purging and archiving project that the team began to see that ARCTOOLS could also help them address data management issues in other applications. Next on the data optimization list was Demantra, Oracle’s
demand management, sales and operations planning tool. Due to the large volume of data which was growing at a very fast rate, system performance was becoming an issue.

Thanks to ARCTOOLS’ open architecture and module adaptability, the same team was able to quickly and easily configure ARCTOOLS to optimize the Demantra database. This was easily handled by creating an additional environment on the existing
ARCTOOLS instance.

The following Demantra modules were in scope for this data management requirement:

Demand Management & Annual Operation Planning:

  • Sales
  • Forecast
  • Year end estimated
  • Sales planning

Predictive Trade Planning:

  • Promotions

Discount & Price Management:

  • Discounts
  • Price lists
  • Bonuses

The initial set of modules was configured in a matter of days and once validated went live in a controlled, scheduled manner similar to the JD Edwards modules.  Nearly 700 million transactions were archived.

Purging and Archiving Going Forward

Purging and archiving at ARCOR has now been fully automated, saving time and money and freeing up the IT team to focus on higher value added tasks. Because of the value delivered by the JD Edwards and Demantra projects, optimizing data is now being extended to other ARCOR applications, making ARCTOOLS a template solution for all data management archiving requirements.

“The best support person I have ever worked with”

Ennis Logo Ennis, Inc. (www.ennis.com) has a nationwide footprint with over 50 facilities across North America engaging in the print and manufacture of business forms, apparel and commercial print for the wholesale trade.

They have been running JD Edwards E1 8.12 on their AS400 platform since 2007 and had accumulated lots of data, including millions of F0911 records.

“The best support person I have ever worked with”

–  Gene Szabo, iSeries System Administrator, Ennis, Inc.

They used ARCTOOLS to purge and archive roughly 3 years of data from accounts receivable, accounts payable, purchase orders, sales orders, work orders, cardex and general ledger.  During that process, Gene had the opportunity to work with ARCTOOLS support personnel and he was obviously very pleased with the service provided.

Work FASTER – Without a Hardware Upgrade

PURGE AND ARCHIVE WITH INTEGRITY

Your machine is slowing down. There are two ways to speed up processing — get a bigger machine or get rid of some data. Getting a bigger machine costs real money. Getting rid of some data is complicated due to the integrated nature of the files. At first, adding disk space provides an acceptable performance improvement at a reasonable cost. Eventually, however, the rising slope of the “data volume versus dollars required to process it” curve backs you into a corner — more hardware or less data. Pick one. Eventually, most shops will want to purge.

Getting rid of some data is complicated due to the integrated nature of the files.”

Dave Shea
President of DCSoftware, Inc

Accessing the old data

The first question I get asked is, “How do I get rid of the old data?” The second question I get asked is, “How do I get it back?”

Keep in mind — we’re not getting rid of the data. We are getting it out of the way. Also bear in mind that we’re getting it out of the way with integrity. Data that was supposed to stay together was archived together. The data that is now in the archive should support many of the report and inquiry functions within the software.

Summary

Data archiving sounds fairly straightforward when you first start thinking about it. As you proceed further down the road and recognize the realities of file relationships, data integrity and batches, you start realizing just how difficult a task purging really is. PeopleSoft has some purge functionality, but many customers have discovered that more is needed than what is provided in the standard software. Some customers have tried tackling this on their own, with varying levels of success or failure.

DCSoftware has spent years developing a purge and archive approach for PeopleSoft that utilizes ARCTOOLS/400 as the purge engine. The result is a product that provides the ability to purge and archive with integrity, without locking users out of the system, without adversely impacting other work on the system, and on a flexible time schedule.

Quest - Work Faster without an UpgradeIn this Quest Q&A article, purge and archive expert David Shea from DCSoftware, Inc. (the creator of ARCTOOLS) discusses the options, pitfalls and realities of what at first sounds like a simple proposition.

ARCTOOLS Gains JD Edwards Validations

by Alex Woodie – (IT Jungle)

IT JungleJD Edwards shops upgrading to World A9.3 or EnterpriseOne versions 9.0 and 9.1 can feel good about purging unwanted data from their systems using DCSoftware’s ARCTOOLS utility now that Oracle has validated the product on those particular ERP systems.

ARCTOOLS helps automate the process of identifying old data in production databases, and moving it into a long term archive. The software works with DB2 for i, SQL Server, and Oracle databases, and allows users to schedule when purge jobs should run, and allows users to “throttle” them back to avoid impacting production systems. DCSoftware counts more than 400 JD Edwards World and EnterpriseOne shops as customers, and also targets BPCS, which Infor officially calls Infor10 ERP iEnterprise.

Last week, DCSoftware received the official nod of approval from Oracle for running ARCTOOLS version 7 against World A9.3, the most current release of the ERP system, which runs only on IBM i version 7.1. Last fall, DCSoftware gained certification for Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0 and 9.1; version 9.1 is the most current release of EnterpriseOne.

“Applications like ARCTOOLS that have gained the “validated integration” stamp of approval from Oracle have gone through a “rigorous technical review and test process…”

Kevin O’Brien
Senior Director of ISV and SaaS strategy for Oracle

Kevin continues to say in their press release, “The validation gives our customers confidence that the integration between ARCTOOLS v7 and Oracle’s JD Edwards World A9.3 has been validated and that the products work together as designed. This helps reduce risk and improves the implementation cycles for our joint customers.”

Oracle recommends that JD Edwards customers purge their data before embarking on upgrades. Since this is upgrade season for both JD Edwards World and EnterpriseOne shops, and older releases of those ERP systems will cease to be supported later this year, it would seem that the timing for DCSoftware is good.

Data Growth, System Optimization & More

Today, even in our personal lives, we are inundated by data. In business, this deluge of data is even more pronounced. We no longer speak about megabytes (106) and gigabytes (109), but rather of terabytes (1012), petabytes (1015) and even, in some cases, exabytes (1018). [An exabyte is equal to 1,000 petabytes or 1,000,000 terabytes].

It is not only the quantity of data generated and stored by companies that has exploded in recent years; the data growth rate has also accelerated. As copies and clones of data are produced for testing, development, training and security, the amount of data to be managed can quickly spiral out of control.¹

“Despite the fact that the cost of data storage has declined, keeping excess data still has significant cost implications. While there is an impact on capital expenditure with the need to invest in more storage, the real impact is in terms of operating costs.”
